My mother is a bird watcher. She loves birds and does all she can to make them comfortable enough to hang around for her to watch. I usually give them a passing glance and move on with my life. I don’t know birds. Aside from the most glaringly obvious like Woodpeckers and Cardinals, I don’t think their names when I see them.

This week, though, I bought the telephoto lens and decided I wanted to photograph birds. Funny thing, but that makes me want to know their names so I don’t look too dumb when I post their pictures on my blog.

This is a Chipping Sparrow.

Yes, I had to look that up. Maybe next time I’ll remember the name, but I didn’t this time.

I don’t know what this is.

It’s a paranoid bird, looking under the feeder for potential enemies, but beyond that I don’t know its name. I’m sure it is something embarrassingly common. My mother will probably call to tell me before long, and I’ll be properly embarrassed by it. If she does, I’ll let you know.

Addendum: After digging around in Wikipedia a little longer, I’ve decided my mystery bird is a Brown-Headed Nuthatch. Now we only have to wait to see if my mother agrees.

  1. I have a birdhouse similar to the one in your first photo. My dad was here today and showed me how to clean out the house for the new birds. Within minutes after cleaning it out, a bluebird stopped by and peeked inside 🙂

  2. We just had the back deck rebuilt, and I have to get off my rearend and rehang the bird feeders. Gail is afraid that the birds feel that we’ve abandoned them.

  3. My mother said the birds are going around picking out their houses right now. I didn’t know they shopped around.

I’m thinking of putting up my own bird feeder. I’ve more than neglected the birds. I’m probably on their mean lady list.
