Cruel Balance <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is you, teetering here–<\/p>\n

bitter yesterday's coffee<\/p>\n

and a spoon of sugar, everything<\/p>\n

repulsive and desired.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is you, a headache<\/p>\n

at the party, a joke at the meeting, <\/p>\n

a backward glance <\/p>\n

where it should never have gone.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is you, absolute hopeful<\/p>\n

arriving with the afternoon mail,<\/p>\n

but that one pain occupying places<\/p>\n

inside it can never give up.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This is you, on the edge,<\/p>\n

staring at creek water with a thirst<\/p>\n

for desert sunset, sleeping through<\/p>\n

marathons of regret, awake <\/p>\n

in the hidden folds of the night.<\/p>\n
