I wasn’t particularly impressed. I did, however, enjoy the little bits of historical detail tossed into a story that otherwise only marginally grabbed my attention.

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane is about the Salem Witch Trials. Connie, the main character, is a Harvard graduate student looking for a dissertation topic. She uncovers details about Deliverance Dane in her grandmother’s house. Deliverance was executed as a witch in Salem, and wouldn’t you know with a name like Constance, our heroine turns out to be a direct descendant. She also happens to have some witchy powers that she manages to discover along the way.

I thought the plot was too predictable to be suspenseful and that the dialogue was a little on the corny side. I wasn’t expecting great literature. I would have been happy with your average lowbrow page-turner, but this one was still only “just okay” as far as I was concerned.

It did, however, renew my interest in Salem, and I ended up watching The Crucible after I read it. That I do recommend.

The story of Salem itself is fascinating. How a few young girls could make accusations that would turn a whole town crazy enough to execute an ongoing string of innocent people is nearly unfathomable. I think I’ll read a non-fiction piece about it next, though. Apparently, once I read Arthur Miller’s rendition I was done with the fictional versions.

19 of 52 in my 2011 book blogging challenge.
